Biocatalysts
Catalysts accelerate chemical reactions without being consumed. They lower the activation energy which is needed for a chemical reaction to take place. Conventional catalysts often contain rare metals and are toxic or non-renewable. Biocatalysts are usually enzymes that catalyze chemical reactions under mild reaction conditions which include water as a solvent or other organic solvents. A big advantage of biocatalysts is that chemical compounds can be synthesized with high purity. Biocatalysts are used among other compounds to synthesize therapeutic agents.

GHG Reduction Potential
Biocatalysts renounce the application of noble, rare, toxic, and/or non-renewable metals and materials. They can avoid harsh reaction conditions e. g. toxic and hazardous solvents and can be used in mild reaction conditions. GHG emissions regarding the degradation of rare metals can be avoided.
