Producers of chemicals are driven by the assumption that “The more you sell the more you earn”, putting a lot of pressure on the environment. The concept of Chemical Leasing promotes that producers produce just the right amount of chemicals and make sure that they are used in the best possible way, by also providing the customer with the right knowledge or services. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the usage of biocides drastically increased, leading to shortages of some of the resources. Therefore, ISC3 selected biocides as a possible field of application for Chemical Leasing and wants to set up a hands-on implementation project in one of our partner countries. In this course, you will learn how to apply the Chemical Leasing business model to your industry.

To harmonise Chemical hazards’ classification and communication systems worldwide, the United Nations adopted, in 2003, the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS), an important tool for countries to develop or modify national programmes and to facilitate trade. The overall goal of the course is to enhance the participants' knowledge and skills for applying the GHS. Participants will learn about: the purpose, scope and application of the GHS; classification of hazardous substances and mixtures; and hazard communication (i.e., labelling and safety data sheets). After completing the course, participants will be able to: 1) Describe the international policy framework for the GHS and international chemicals management; 2) Apply GHS criteria in classifying physical, health, and environmental hazards; 3) Select appropriate hazard communication elements; 4) Develop classification for safety data sheets and GHS-based labels; 5) Develop effective hazard communication strategies adapted to specific contexts.

This course provides interested stakeholders an introduction to the sound management of manufactured nanomaterials. Nanomaterials have a range of novel properties enabling many new, useful applications in areas such as medicine, environment, energy production and material technology. However, the special properties of nanomaterials can also be a challenge, as these materials may have different implications for human health or the environment compared to traditional chemicals.
Participants will learn about global, national and sector-specific issues, and begin to develop skills for recognising safety concerns and learning about risk management. After completing the course, participants will be able to: 1) Discuss properties, uses, and safety issues of nano-containing products; 2) Classify hazard, exposure and risk assessments, and options; 3) Identify opportunities and challenges to regulate nanomaterials; 4) Discuss international and national regulatory approaches; 5) Differentiate applications and uses of nanomaterials to improve environmental, health, and safety issues.

The aim of this course is to give guidance to countries (governments and authorities) in their efforts to set up an efficient system for the sound management of chemicals with a special focus on legal and voluntary tools for risk reduction of chemical substances, on their own or when used in mixtures or in articles. The course focuses on preventive chemicals control; measures directed towards the placing of chemicals on the market. The risk management of chemicals covered here makes use of information on the properties of chemicals at an early point in their life cycle, helping to manage exposure to chemicals with adverse effects. This course is based on the Swedish Chemical Agency’s - KemI - publication on “Risk Reduction of Chemicals”, one of a series of documents developed by KemI. It is a complement to the UNEP Guidance on the Development of Legal and Institutional Infrastructures and Measures for Recovering Costs of National Administration (LIRA guidance).

In this course, participants will be introduced to the challenges of waste and the concept of circular economy. The course is based on the latest reports on waste management and circular economy, as well as relevant country case studies. The methodological part builds on UNITAR’s “Guidelines for national waste management strategies: moving from challenges to opportunities,” and draws heavily on the Basel Convention Guidance Manuals for Governments.
Learning objectives: 1) Understand the importance of sound waste management in relation to SDGs and reduction of poverty; 2) Identify tools that can be used on effective planning for waste management; 3) Discuss how to promote effective governance of waste among key stakeholders; 4) Identify policy instruments to be used on waste management and waste reduction; 5) Discuss how circular economy approaches can be supported through waste management; 6) Understand the importance of biowaste management and its contribution to economic growth.

The Summer School provides the participants with an understanding of the concepts, tools and approaches of Sustainable Chemistry including the latest developments of Sustainable Chemistry and chemicals management. On top of that the Summer School aims to foster exchange of knowledge and experiences between the speakers and participants from different regions, with regard to the selected focus topic such as for example renewables, climate change, water, building and living, agriculture, electronics or textiles (topics change every year). The upcoming Summer School will take place in July 2024 at Leuphana University, Lüneburg, Germany and will take a closer look at the topic of safe and sustainable by design.
